Are you looking for a fulfilling, valued and well-paying career? Countless motivated Mainers are finding just that in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration sector.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, our country will likely add more than 400,000 new HVAC-R jobs in this decade. These are high-skill positions for active and engaged workers — and they ensure the safety and comfort of Maine residents.
The MEMA Technical Education Center has developed a slate of training programs in partnership with the 300 Maine Energy Marketers Association member companies. These companies provide guidance on our training processes and donate modern energy-efficient equipment for our students to work on. They understand the value of MTEC’s education programs in fostering the next generation of HVAC-R technicians.
MTEC’s campus includes traditional classroom space and a state-of-the-art lab facility (including a 2,400-square-foot oilheat and air conditioning lab and a 1,400 square-foot propane and food-service equipment lab) for hands-on education. All MTEC’s instructors are experienced authorities in their field. Our training is geared toward helping you prepare for state certification exams and move quickly into a paid position with a Maine HVAC-R company.
Our popular HVAC-R Professional Certification Program lasts four months and encompasses all our core education tracks: Oilheat, Natural Gas, Propane and Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. Completing this program puts you on course to pass your state exams, reduce your apprenticeship time by half and secure a good job quickly.
The comprehensive Air Conditioning and Refrigeration program can be completed in three weeks, after which you will be prepared for EPA Section 608 Technician Certification. You will also have a broad understanding of electric heat pumps, meeting all training requirements for Efficiency Maine.
If you already have your EPA Section 608 certification, you can take our 40-Hour Heat Pump Training as a stand-alone course.
This is Maine’s most thorough Oilheat technician training, and you can complete it in only six weeks! At the end, you will be ready to take your Maine Journeyman’s Oil Burner exam. You’ll also have a 200-hour Oilheat Certificate, reducing your required apprenticeship time from 2,000 hours to 1,000.
MTEC has developed our Propane and Natural Gas program using the industry-standard Certified Employee Training Program (CETP). You will learn appliance installation and service, tank setting and gas line placement. And we prepare you to take your state certification exam.
MTEC also offers individual courses to prepare you for a dynamic career in the HVAC-R sector and further develop your skills. Our courses cover topics that our students and member companies have found essential for professional development. They include:
